Therapy for Depression & Disconnection

Does Life Feel Heavy, Dark and Empty?

Do you feel sluggish, low, numb, and disconnected from yourself, from others, or from life itself?

Are you constantly tired and weighed down by sadness and self-doubt, struggling to find the energy to do even the simplest things?

Perhaps you are managing on the outside — working, caring for others, meeting responsibilities — while inside you feel lost, unseen, and profoundly alone.

People of Colour

Depression can be a very lonely place. Many people find it difficult to verbalise their emotions or express their feelings honestly, often for fear of being judged, misunderstood, or dismissed. For many people of colour, this can be even harder. You may have grown up learning to cope quietly, to stay strong, or to put others' needs before your own, leaving little space to tend to your own emotional pain.

Over time, what is not expressed can turn inward, showing up as heaviness, numbness, or a slow erosion of self-worth.

These experiences are real, and they matter.

"Why Do I Still Feel This Way When I Try So Hard to Be Positive?"

From a young age, many of us are taught to persevere, stay positive, and not dwell on difficult emotions. Messages like "be strong," "don't complain," "others have it worse," or "pray, and it will pass" can be well-intentioned, but over time, they can leave you feeling that your sadness and struggles are not welcome, that you are too much, or not enough.

For many people of colour, these messages are often tied to cultural expectations, family loyalty, migration stories, and histories of racism and survival. Emotions such as sadness, anger, grief, or fear can feel unsafe or unacceptable to express.

When feelings are repeatedly pushed aside, they don't disappear. They turn inward, showing up as exhaustion, numbness, and a deepening disconnection from yourself and your life.

Depression Is Not a Personal Failure

Depression is not a sign that you are weak or broken. It is often a natural response to long periods of stress, loss, or emotional overwhelm.

Bereavement, relationship difficulties, health challenges, financial pressure, experiences of racism or exclusion, or the quiet grief of feeling stuck in a life that no longer reflects who you are, can take a toll and leave you feeling depressed and hopeless.

You may notice:

- Persistent sadness or emptiness.

- Low energy or constant fatigue.

- Loss of motivation or interest in things that once mattered.

- Self-doubt or a sense of worthlessness.

- Emotional numbness or disconnection.

- A feeling that life has lost its colour or meaning.

Depression affects how you think, feel, and experience your body. Many people live with it for years without ever naming it, because it crept in gradually, or because they were taught to keep going regardless.

You are not alone. And this is not your fault.

You Don't Have to Go Through This Alone

Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy, and it is treatable. Many people reach out after trying everything they know to feel better, often uncertain whether anything will really help.

I offer a safe, confidential space where you can speak honestly about your experience, and please know that you will be truly heard and received exactly as you are, with care and without judgment.

Working with a therapist who understands the cultural, emotional, and social layers of your experience can make all the difference. Having the courage to ask for support, especially when you have spent a lifetime managing alone, is one of the most self-loving steps you can take.

Making Sense of Your Depression

I offer a safe and gentle way to explore what lies beneath your depression, at a pace that feels right for you. We may look at early life experiences, family expectations, cultural pressures, or experiences of trauma, loss, and discrimination. Together, we explore the patterns of self-criticism, emotional shutdown, people-pleasing, or over-responsibility that may once have helped you cope, but now leave you feeling stuck and depleted.

Through this process, you can begin to:

Develop greater kindness, compassion, and understanding towards yourself.

Recognise and honour your own needs.

Set clearer boundaries without excessive guilt.

Reconnect with your values, your strengths, and your sense of purpose.

Depression Affects the Body as Well as the Mind

Depression is not only something that happens in your thoughts. It is often a whole-body experience. You may feel heavy, tense, achy, or collapsed — lacking energy and motivation. Or you may feel numb and disconnected from your body, shut down and switched off from the life around you.

As a body psychotherapist, I understand depression as a body-mind experience. The body often holds what could not be safely expressed, and long-held feelings of sadness, grief, or fear can show up physically as well as emotionally. Working with the body allows us to listen to these signals with care and compassion, and to begin bringing light back to the places that have been shrouded in darkness.

How Body Psychotherapy Can Support Healing

Body psychotherapy offers a gentle, supportive way to reconnect with your body's natural capacity for healing. By bringing attention to breath, sensation, movement, and emotion, you can begin to release what has been held inside — and feel more present, more alive, and more yourself.

This approach can help you:

  • Feel more grounded and settled within yourself

  • Restore energy and vitality

  • Release tension and emotional holding

  • Develop a stronger sense of agency and self-trust

  • Move from being caught in your thoughts to listening deeply to your body as a source of guidance and wisdom.

A Gradual Return to Yourself

This work is not about fixing you. It is about supporting you to come back to yourself, and reclaim your inner awareness, your strength, and your power.

As the work unfolds, you may begin to feel:

- More present and connected

- Less weighed down or numb

- More able to experience feeling and emotion

- More grounded in your sense of self

- A renewed sense of purpose and direction

You may have further questions or concerns

I should be able to manage this on my own.

Many people feel they shouldn’t need help, especially if they have spent much of their life being strong for others. But depression can disconnect you from your own inner core, making it genuinely difficult to stand strong alone.

Therapy is not about taking power away from you. It is about offering you care and support to help you reconnect with your inner core, discover your worth and value, and find the strength to overcome depression and find your way back to yourself.

I’ve felt this way for a long time. Can things really change?

When depression has been present for a long time, it can feel hard to imagine life being any different. Doubt and hopelessness are part of the experience of depression, not the truth of what is possible.

The fact that you are reading this suggests that a part of you is open to the possibility of change. That part is worth listening to.

Body psychotherapy can help you recover your strength and resilience, and your sense of aliveness, as you move towards a life that feels more meaningful and connected.

I'm a private person. I'm not sure I'm ready to open up to a stranger.

This is one of the most honest things someone can feel when considering therapy — and it is especially common among people of colour, who have often learned, for very good reasons, to keep their inner world protected.

You don't have to arrive ready to open up. You simply have to arrive.

We begin wherever you are. There is no expectation, no pressure to share more than feels right, and no timeline you are held to. Trust builds slowly, through consistent experience of being received with care and without judgement — and that is exactly what this space is designed to offer.

Many people who considered themselves deeply private have found, over time, that having one place where they can finally be completely honest becomes one of the most relieving and liberating experiences of their life.

You get to decide the pace. Always.
