Windrush
On following the heart, remembering home, and the threads of connection that endure across migration and distance.
The Ship that brought me here has sailed.
But the heart that weaved its way across the world.
That beat strong to keep me alive,
To help me survive.
The heart that warmed me
When fires were cold.
When my soles were heavy,
And my skin was too dark,
To pungent,
Too bold.
That heart with a lilt of sunshine,
A roar of fire.
A ca-dance of music,
Of joy,
Desire.
That same heart
That sailed into harbour,
Disembarked,
Led me on journeys,
Left its mark.
That blazing heart
Will always guide me home.
